Lee Smith: A lifetime of paying attention
One of my favorite memories from when I was little: drifting off to sleep at the lakehouse to the soft lull and laughter coming from all my aunts, uncles, grandparents, parents and great-aunts and uncles. They were the most magical storytellers. I loved any family get-together because it was filled with the funniest or best stories. As Lee Smith said, it could be the smallest, most mundane thing, but it’s the way my family talked and told a story that made everything worth listening to. I wrote a book of collected stories when I was 18. This is a great reminder to keep paying attention to everything and my families stories …and to keep writing.
